Although numerous prominent gaming firms already make voluntary donations to research, education, and treatment (RET) programs, the BGC suggests that a mandatory framework could offer more dependable financing. They highlight the instance of the £100 million commitment made by their five largest associates to autonomous charities in 2020. This financial backing assists the majority of problem gamblers seeking assistance within the UK.
Nevertheless, the BGC stresses the significance of safeguarding land-based enterprises confronting escalating expenditures. They contend that any obligatory levy should be executed alongside strategies to alleviate these burdens, guaranteeing equitable conditions. In essence, they aim to ensure that physical businesses, already grappling with overhead costs, are not unjustly disadvantaged compared to their online counterparts.
Furthermore, the BGC underscores the importance of preserving the existing structure where funds are allocated independently, free from industry sway. This guarantees that the resources are directed towards the most productive and influential programs.
Duher went on, “The biggest firms in our network have pledged to contribute one percent of their earnings via an entirely distinct mechanism to bolster research initiatives, educational programs, and therapeutic interventions.
“BGC and our affiliates are primarily focused on guaranteeing that these resources are directed towards high-impact charitable organizations and propel genuinely autonomous, empirically-grounded investigations.
“The source of the financial support is inconsequential in this context. I’m also aware that certain individuals within the NHS previously expressed reluctance to accept contributions from this sector, so it’s heartening to observe their apparent willingness to do so now.”
